Athanasia Theodoropoulou is an MSc student in the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Patras, in the Postgraduate Program of Drug Discovery and Development with a specialization in medicinal chemistry and natural products. She studied Chemistry at the University of Patras, a subject she wanted to study from a very young age. Very soon, she developed a strong interest in biochemistry, which led her to join the Biochemistry Lab of the Department of Chemistry for her diploma thesis, under the supervision of Prof. Nikos K. Karamanos. There, she worked on the in vitro study of the extracellular matrix in triple-negative breast cancer cells and gained experience in several techniques related to eukaryotic cell cultures, both 2D and 3D, as well as methods such as qPCR and western blotting. An assignment in the undergraduate Biotechnology course motivated her to explore the structural functions of enzymes, which later inspired her to join the Lab of Biomolecular NMR (Prof. G.A. Spyroulias) for her postgraduate studies (2024). Currently, she studies the Structural biology of heme enzymes, especially homologous H-NOX β1 domains of soluble Guanylyl Cyclase (sGC), aiming to understand the mechanism and dynamics of this enzyme using various techniques, with an emphasis on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
